Courteeners Live Review

Courteeners - Academy, Leeds (2/5/15)

Callum Thornhill

Playing warm up gigs for their Heaton Park headline slot, Courteeners entertained a sold out Leeds crowd.

The crowd was sweaty, the band were in fine voice and the setlist was perfect. Combining their early St Jude raw tunes to the mature Concrete Love demonstrated perfectly how the band has risen through four albums.

Although it lacked massive hits such as Acrylic and That Kiss, Fray and co. once again blew the roof off Leeds' famous Academy. The band are fond of the venue and said that there and Liverpool are just like playing hometown gigs.

Liam Fray announced that Small Bones would be the next single for the Manchester four piece and that their performance of it at Heaton Park will be recorded for the music video. The song definitely deserves to be a single, beautiful both lyrically and instrumentally.

I personally wanted to hear a load of b-sides and lesser played tracks at the Leeds gig before what I assume to be a greatest hits show on Friday. Sadly though, the only 'lesser known' track played was Why Are You Still With Him? along to the tune of the piano.

Tonight will have seen another sold out gig at Liverpool before Courteeners headline Manchester's Heaton Park in front of 25,000 people on Friday. It is inevitable that the loyal fans will be buzzing for it.

As always Not Nineteen Forever and What Took You So Long? were played right at the end of the Courteeners' set, expect the same at Heaton Park. It will certainly be a night to remember.
